Rhys Thompson Senior Lawyer


Rhys joined Hornabrook Macdonald in 2013 as a staff solicitor and works closely with Andrew Macdonald. Rhys has a particular interest in corporate and commercial law and advises on a broad range of corporate and commercial issues and transactions.

Prior to joining Hornabrook Macdonald Rhys worked as a solicitor in another Auckland law firm. Rhys has recently completed post-graduate courses taught by professors from both the University of Auckland and University of Oxford. His recent research and writing has been in the areas of equity crowd funding, business competition law (anti-trust law) and agency law.

Prior to commencing practice, Rhys studied international commercial law at the University of Stockholm for 6 months on exchange from the University of Auckland.

  • Commercial business acquisitions and disposals.
  • Group company restructure including intellectual property licensing and services arrangement.
  • Successful Overseas Investment Office application in the significant business asset category ($100+ million).
  • Advising underwriter to issue of convertible notes including Takeovers Code and Overseas Investment Office considerations.
  • Advising multi-national air carrier on various commercial issues.
  • Preparing an international supply and distribution agreement.
  • Incorporating companies and limited partnerships including drafting shareholders agreements and limited partnership agreements.
  • Negotiation and settling the division of a group of joint venture companies as junior counsel.
  • Appearing as junior counsel with Queens Counsel in an arbitration.
